Handheld Electronic Devices and Our Children

The head coach of a local junior high school, while on a bus ride to a soccer match, discovered four of his players viewing pornographic pictures on a cell phone. The next day, a junior high math instructor discovers two of his students viewing pornography on a PDA concealed behind a textbook during class. This is becoming a frequent occurrence and it is growing to epidemic proportions. C/NET News.com recently reported, “Adult content on mobile devices will be worth $3.3 billion by 2011, up from $1.4 billion this year, according to industry analysts Juniper Research” (Best, 2006).
The pornography industry is mounting its next big assault on our children’s sexual morality. Adding to its already potent arsenal of pornographic pictures, pornographic videos are becoming widely available on portable electronic devices including PDAs and wireless internet capable cell phones. This new mobile technology, known as “3G wireless”, allows video to be sent wirelessly and received on handheld electronic devices.
